Successfully designing databases for deployment over the World Wide Web not only requires a fundamental understanding of relational databases and their design, but also how other technologies will impact that design. Design decisions can no longer be based solely upon the results of traditional methodologies such as normalization. Often, the designer must take in consideration issues such as bandwidth, display of mixed media, and even adding a field specifically as a workaround to an inherent limitation within that infrastructure we call the Internet.
